World renowned American soprano Laura Aikin is a familiar presence in the worlds great opera houses and concert halls performing with many of the greatest conductors of our time including Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, Sylvain Cambreling, William Christie, Christoph von Dohnányi, Daniele Gatti, Michael Gielen, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, René Jacobs, Fabio Luisi, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Helmuth Rilling, Donald Runnicles, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Markus Stenz and Franz Welser-Möst,.
Possessing a range of over three octaves and an arresting stage presence, her repertoire embraces works from the Baroque to the contemporary. In great demand in both Europe and America she began her career as a member of the ensemble at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin from 1992-98 where she performed more than 300 times in such major roles as Lulu, Königin der Nacht/DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, Zerbinetta/ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, Amenaide/TANCREDI, Sophie/DER ROSENKAVALIER, Adele/DIE FLEDERMAUS, and Zaide.
Laura Aikin is now a regular guest in such houses as the Vienna State Opera, La Scala Milan, Bavarian State Opera, Opernhaus Zurich, Netherlands Opera, Opéra National de Paris, Semperoper Dresden, Gran Teatro del Liceu Barcelona, Opera Frankfurt, Chicago Lyric Opera, Santa Fe Opera, San Francisco Opera and Metropolitan Opera New York.
In addition to her numerous concert appearances at the Salzburg Festival, she appeared in 1999 as the Königin der Nacht, in 2003 as Badiat in the world premiere of Henze's opera L'UPUPA, in 2004 as Blondchen in DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL and as Konstanze in the same production in the 2006 festival. She was highly acclaimed by audience and press for her interpretation of "Marie" in Zimmermanns DIE SOLDATEN at this years Salzburg Festival. In summer 2013, she will return to Salzburg Festival for a new production of Birtwistles GAWAIN.
As a concert artist Miss Aikin has appeared throughout the world with orchestras such as the Dallas, London, San Francisco, Chicago, Vienna, BBC and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras, the Berlin, Munich, Israel and Vienna Philharmonics, Cleveland Orchestra, Bayerische Rundfunk Orchestra, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Les Arts Florissants, Concerto Köln and Concentus Musicus. The many international festivals in which she has performed include Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, Schleswig-Holstein, Melbourne, Edinburgh, Luzern, Wiener Festwochen and Berliner Festwochen. As a Lied singer she has performed in Berlin, Milan, Dresden and Rome, and made her American recital debut in the San Francisco Chamber Music Series.
Recent operatic successes have included her first Lucia/LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR for Opéra de Montpellier, Aithra/DIE ÄGYPTISCHE HELENA for Deutsche Oper Berlin, Lulu at Lyon Opera, La Scala and the Wiener Festwochen in the new Peter Stein production, Diana/ARBORE DI DIANA for the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Cleopatra/GIULIO CESARE at the Semperoper, Dresden and Olympia/LES CONTES DHOFFMANN for the Opéra National de Paris.
Recent concert engagements have included Brahms EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under Jaap Van Zweden and St Louis Symphony under David Robertson Haydns THE CREATION with the St Louis Symphony Orchestra, Bergs ALTENBERG LIEDER with the Orchestra of the Opéra National de Paris under Pierre Boulez, concerts with the San Francisco Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas, concert performances of Donna Anna/DON GIOVANNI with the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Iván Fischer and Alban Bergs LULU-Suite with the Radio Symphony Orchestra and Cornelius Meister at the Konzerthaus in Vienna.
Highlights of the 2011/2012 season included Lulu for the Opéra National de Paris, Konstanze and Marguérite/LES HUGUENOTS for Strasbourg Opera and Marilyn Monroe in the première of De Raaffs opera WAITING FOR MISS MONROE for Netherlands Opera and various concerts throughout Europe and the United States.
Her many acclaimed recordings include Beethoven's CHRISTUS AM ÖLBERG with Daniel Barenboim on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Centennial Edition Recording, Songs and Cycles by Ned Rorem for Orfeo with pianist Donald Sulzen, Schönberg's DIE JAKOBSLEITER with the Südwestfunk Symphony Orchestra, Respighi's LA CAMPANA SOMMERSA with the Montpellier Opera and a DVD of LULU live from Opernhaus Zürich. Other DVD releases include Henze's L'UPUPA, and DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL from the Salzburg Festival and LES DIALOGUES DES CARMELITES from La Scala with Riccardo Muti.
